ART RESIDENCY

The Art Residency at the Old Carpet Factory is a highly selective program with the mission to record and preserve the heritage of Hydra, to support new creative ideas, and to expand access to the unique cultural setting of the  Greek island and its community. The Art Residency provides an opportunity for artists and creatives from around the world to live and work in a setting of the 18th-century mansion marked by the unique artistic heritage of Hydra Island.

Application Process

The Art Residency application is open on a rolling basis. Artists and creatives are invited to submit their ideas in four categories that advance the mission of our program. 

  • Documenting Hydra, the islands local commmunity as well as recording the cultural heritage of the island. This category is ideal for visual artists but open for all disciplines. 
  • Site-specific projects at the Old Carpet Factory house. We are looking for projects that will continue the centuries-long heritage of the historical landmark or add to the lifestyle of the recording studio.  
  • Sound Art. Old Carpet Factory Recording Studio presents a unique opportunity for artists working in sound, composition, voice and experimental music.  
  • #LiveatOCF We host free live performances with the goal to connect local community to the cultures of the world and to inspire  new ideas that can be valuable for the  cultural heritage of the island.  (Musicians looking to record an album do not qualify for the residency. To inquire about the studio fees, refer to the Studio page)

Art Residency Eligibility

Art Residency opportunities are open to international sound, visual and interdisciplinary artists, writers, composers, musicians, filmmakers, playwrights, photographers, and architects.  Musician looking to record an album do not qualify for the residency and should submit an inquiry through the Studio page. 

Applicants must be 21+ years of age at the moment of their application.

Collaborative groups are eligible to apply, however if selected, Art Residency at the Old Carpet Factory  is only able to accommodate one member of a collaborative group to attend the residency and live on-site. Exceptions may be granted to Artist + Curator duos submitting a project and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Art Residency Benefits

Art Residency at the Old Carpet Factory provides time and space for artists in need of a creative freedom and inspiration. The location offers an authentic cultural experience surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of Hydra. 

Artists have the ability to use the house and the island for their work, research, experiment, and inspiration. Art Residents are provided with a private bedroom and are given access to all parts of the house. 

Old Carpet Factory Residency offers a unique opportunity to immerse into the life of the local community and at the same time meet international artists. 

Cost and Funding

Artists are responsible for travel and supply expenses. Room is covered by the program. Additional project-specific funding might be available on a case-by-case basis.
